Digital Mapping

Ray Gasson & Associates offer a professional digital mapping service, producing high quality estate and farm plans for a multitude of uses.

Using GPS technology we can accurately update Ordnance Survey maps, and recalculate field areas producing schedules of both gross and cropped field areas, to aid with SPS applications.

The Technology

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a navigation system consisting of 24 satellites and ground support. GPS provides users with accurate information about their position and velocity anywhere in the world and in all weather conditions.

GPS determines a position by calculating the difference between the time taken for a signal to reach a satellite and the time taken to receive it back. The GPS then uses the time difference to determine its distance from the satellite and by sending signals to 3 different satellites the receiver can then ascertain its own three dimensional position.

Producing Maps

Signals are continuously sent from the GPS receiver to the satellites, so every second the exact position of the GPS receiver is calculated. A hand held computer attached to the GPS receiver records each co-ordinate and joins them together to produce a line. By moving around a feature such as a new boundary or game crop, the GPS plots the position of the feature.

GPS map data plot

The lines produced by the GPS receiver are then downloaded into a mapping program where the data is combined with existing digital Ordnance Survey maps.

Imported map data

Using the software we update the OS maps with the GPS data to produce new estate plans, and re-calculate gross field and cropped areas.
